Chapter 6: Her Terms

I did not say yes right away.

Last time, a man had stood in a doorway in a black suit, and I had been dead by the time he spoke.

Now he sat in front of me with both hands still on the arms of his chair.

"Why me?" I asked.

"You came out of that house at midnight and put a dying man's heart back in his chest," Rowan said. "I've watched your family for two years. Nobody in it has done anything like that."

"That's a reason to hire me, not marry me."

"The Penhallows will finish what they started if you stay under their roof."

I looked at him.

"What did they start?"

"My window looks into your dining room," he said. "I saw your brother lift that chair."

I felt my face go still.

Somebody had watched, and nobody had come.

Last time, that had been the whole story of my life in that house.

"I have terms," I said.

"Say them."

"One year. Then we both walk away."

"Agreed."

"Separate rooms."

His eyebrows moved a little. "Agreed."

"I keep my grandfather's clinic. I work there three days a week, and nobody gives me a speech about it."

"Agreed."

"No kissing."

"Fine."

He answered each one so fast that I frowned.

"You didn't even think."

"I thought about them for two years," he said. "Go on."

"Every night, I put needles in your legs."

He went absolutely still.

"I watched you cross the road," I said. "The left wheel drags when you turn. That's not nerves cut in half. That's a bruise on the spine that never got treated, and the muscles are asleep. The doctors told you it was permanent, didn't they?"
