Chapter 14: Served

Fergus folded the yellow sheet in half and put it in his apron pocket.

"Thanks for coming by," he told the inspector. "Want a grilled cheese?"

"I can't accept food."

"It's a grilled cheese, not a bribe."

She left without one.

The whole diner was looking at me.

I stood up on the booth seat so the back of the line could see me.

"I'm so sorry," I said. "This is the last Thursday here."

Fergus turned around at the grill.

"Doc."

"Everybody on tonight's list gets a Tuesday appointment at University. I'll see you myself. I'll stay late. Ciara, give me the placemats."

"Doc," Fergus said again, louder.

The families went quietly.

The milk boy's mother squeezed my hand on the way out and said, "Tuesday," like a promise.

At two a.m. the diner was empty.

Fergus scraped the grill in long hard strokes that I could hear across the room.

"Say it," I said.

"You didn't ask me."

"She was going to take your license."

"She gave me a warning. On my diner. On my license." He put the scraper down. "And you stood on my booth and closed it for me."

"I was protecting you."

"I don't need protecting. I need to be asked."

"You'd have said keep going."

"Maybe." He came around the counter. "Maybe I'd have called my cousin at the city. Maybe I'd have hung a curtain and called it a back room. Maybe I'd have said, Luna, I've lost a whole family, I can lose a license. We'll never know. You decided."

"I spent three years in a house where somebody else decided everything for me," I said. "I'm not doing that to you."

"You just did."

That stopped me.

He was right, and he could see I knew it.

He looked at me for a long moment, and his jaw was tight under the beard.

"Go home, Doc," he said. "I'm too mad to talk."
