Chapter 16: Counter
The bookshop closes at six, and by ten past, Tobias was standing at my counter with his tie in his hand.
He had come to pick me up. That was the reason he gave.
"The car is outside," he said.
"Dennis is in the car."
"Dennis has a crossword."
I locked the front door and flipped the sign. I turned off every light but the green lamp over the till.
Then I untied my cardigan and let it drop.
Under it I wore the robe. The 4.8-star robe, from our anniversary, which I had put on under my clothes at seven that morning and had thought about all day.
It was a ridiculous thing to wear to work. The ties were silk. It was open to my collarbone.
Tobias looked at it for a long moment.
"Four point eight," he said.
"Out of five. Thousands of reviews."
"What did the missing two tenths say?"
"That it runs short in the arm," I said. "I'd like you to find out for yourself."
He crossed the shop in three steps.
His hands came down on my hips and he lifted me onto the counter, between the register and the stack of bookmarks.
A paperback fell off the edge. Neither of us looked at it.
"Here?" he said, and I could hear that he already knew.
"I've sold nine hundred books at this counter. I want one thing here that isn't a book."
He laughed against my throat, a low, helpless sound, and then he kissed me.
He pulled the silk tie loose. The robe fell open, and he looked at me with nothing between us but the lamp.
His mouth went to my breast. His hand went between my legs, and I was already wet for him.
"You've been thinking about this since morning," he said.
