Chapter 13: Hot Water
Ansel's idea of a day off was a four-mile climb in the snow to a cabin nobody else used.
It stood on a ledge above the tree line, with a tin chimney and a pool of steaming water cut into the rock behind it.
"My grandfather trapped up here," he said. "Hester wanted you out of the clinic for one afternoon, and I wanted you to myself."
"That's the first selfish thing you've said to me."
"I'm practicing."
I had been his guest for thirteen days, and the Gathering was two weeks off.
I stood in the cabin doorway with my pack still on and said what I had been carrying up the mountain.
"Before you take your coat off, I have terms."
He stopped with one boot in his hand.
"Terms."
"You gave me yours on the road. These are mine."
He sat down on the bench and folded his hands, which was how he told people he would listen to anything.
"If you ever bond me, there are no break words," I said. "Not at a rite, not in a temper, not for the pack's sake. I've worn a cut thread. I won't wear another."
"Shadowfang has no break words. My mother's people never wrote any."
"Then you can promise it."
"I promise it. What else?"
"Not before the Gathering. I won't walk into that ring owned by anybody, not even you."
His jaw worked.
"That one costs me."
"I know."
"It's yours," Ansel said. "Is there a third?"
"You stop being careful."
He looked at me for a long moment, and then he began to unlace his other boot.
We left our clothes on the cabin floor and crossed the snow barefoot, and the water closed over my shoulders hot enough to make me gasp.
