After the Tenth Bond Break: I Became the Luna of the Shadowfang Alpha novel · Chapter 4 of 24

Chapter 4: The Beam

I woke in a narrow bed under a quilt that smelled of woodsmoke, with sun on the floor and no fever.

I lay there waiting for the aches the others had always left.

Nothing came.

My body felt clean and strong, and that scared me more than pain would have.

Hester's kitchen was downstairs, a long room with a black stove and a table that could seat twenty.

She had already put a plate in front of an empty chair.

"Eggs, bacon, potatoes," she said. "Sit."

I sat and ate everything on it.

She watched me finish and slid a second plate over without comment.

"You slept fourteen hours," she said. "My nephew checked on you five times and pretended he hadn't."

"He did not."

"The floorboard by your door says otherwise. It squeaks."

I put my fork down.

"Hester, how much did he tell you?"

"That you left a bond. That's all." She poured coffee into a thick white mug. "I'd like to hear the rest from you, if you want to give it. How many times did he break it?"

"Nine, and then the tenth was last night."

The coffeepot stopped halfway to her own cup.

"Ten," she said.

"Is that a bad number?"

"It's a number I haven't seen." She set the pot down carefully. "Eat the potatoes. We'll talk after you've had a bath and a day. I want to check something first in the old books."
