Chapter 13: What the Luna Washed Out

My hand came up to slap her.

It stopped in the air between us, and my wolf said nothing at all.

I put the hand down.

"Say the rest of it," I said.

"The rest of what?"

"Did you know Faye killed Mark?"

My mother closed her eyes.

"She came home that night with his blood on her sleeve," she said. "I washed it out in the kitchen sink while she shook."

"You washed it."

"Yes."

The rain ran into my mouth, and I spat it out.

"Why did she do it?"

"He had seen her file in the Council Registry. He told her he would tell you before the wedding, and then he would tell your father."

"So you let me sign."

"Stanton was in the study with her, and I was in the hall." She pressed the frame harder against her coat. "I told him it was Faye. He asked me what the Council does to a bastard who kills a clerk. I said they would hang her."

"And he said it had to be me."

"He said it could not be her," my mother whispered. "He didn't know why Mark died, Calla. Only I knew that."

I looked at her.

"You knew that if the Council took her blood, they would find out what she is."

"The Council hangs a wolf who forges Alpha blood," she said. "They hang the child, and they hang the mother who helped. I had one daughter I could save, and I picked."

"You picked her."

"I picked the one who would survive five years."

Boots hit the gravel behind me, fast, and stopped.

I did not have to turn around.

"Say that again," Jasper said.

He was soaked to the skin.
