Chapter 19: Not of His Blood
The moon rose over Council Hall just after seven, and the ring went silent.
Twelve Council elders sat on the stone benches at the north end, in gray robes.
Every pack in five states stood on the grass around the circle, and nobody was talking.
Stanton and Faye stood on one side of the ring, and I stood on the other with Jasper's hand locked around mine.
Faye had taken off her coat.
She wore a plain black dress, and her copper hair hung loose over her shoulders.
She had not looked at me once since she walked down the steps.
"The Registry keeper will draw," said the eldest elder, a stooped woman with a cane. "Prosecutor Netherton, are you willing?"
"Of course," Faye said, brightly. "I'm only sorry that we've all been dragged out here for a grieving girl's story."
A few of the Brennick wolves shifted their feet.
The keeper came forward with a leather case.
He wore white gloves and carried two silver-capped vials, and he set them on the stone table in the middle of the ring.
Stanton went first.
He rolled his sleeve without a word and held out his arm, and the keeper drew his blood with a steady hand.
Faye went second.
She held out her wrist with her chin up.
The keeper filled the second vial and capped it.
Then he laid both vials side by side in the moonlight on a flat white dish, and he uncapped them, and with a glass rod he touched a single drop from each into a shallow silver bowl.
"The Registry reads true under the full moon," he said. "If the blood is of one line, the drops will draw together and turn pale. If it is not, they will not."
