Chapter 14: Nothing in His Hands

"She is old," the Priestess said. "She is not wrong."

She said it to Corwin, and she did not raise her voice.

"I have read this line for forty years, Alpha. It does not make mistakes. People do."

A murmur went around the stones, and not one wolf looked at Camille.

Camille stood alone in her white dress.

A few Deverell wolves stood on the far side of the circle, and none of them went to her.

"The reading is disputed," Corwin said. "I will not have the pack's heir mated on a bowl of water and an old woman's say-so. The council will review it."

"Father."

"You are overwrought, Lucan." He nodded to two enforcers. "Take my son home. He's not well. He is not to enter the pack house until he is himself."

"You're throwing me out."

"I'm protecting you."

He said it kindly, as he had said it to me in his study.

Lucan looked at the enforcers, and they looked at their boots.

Then he walked out of the circle on his own, past me, without stopping, and I felt the line pull as he went.

I went home with Kerensa's arm around me and said nothing the whole drive.

At eleven that night someone knocked on the cabin door.

I knew who it was before I opened it.

Lucan stood on the step in his ceremony suit with no coat, no truck, and no bag.

"They took my keys at the gate," he said. "I walked."

"Fourteen miles."

"Fifteen. I took the wrong road at the creek."

He was shaking, not from the cold.

His grey eyes had gone wolf-bright, and a sweat stood on his forehead.

I should have shut the door.

I put my hand on his forehead instead.

He closed his eyes, and his whole weight leaned into my palm.
