Chapter 17: Lucan's POV
Lucan's POV
I went in through the kitchen door of the pack house at four in the morning, because it was the only one my father hadn't thought of.
The lake house was cold and empty, and I hadn't slept in it.
I had spent two nights staring at the ceiling and letting my wolf pace the shore.
He wanted Ada.
He wanted her so badly that my chest ached from the distance, and I had decided the ache was fair.
I had earned every mile of it.
The housekeeper was at the range in her dressing gown with a pot of oats on.
She did not turn around.
"I wondered which of you would come first," she said. "You or the girl."
"Why would either of us come?"
"Because it's me who put it in the thermos."
My hands went cold.
I closed the door behind me and stood on the mat.
"Ada told me," I said. "She said you only signed for it. That you didn't know what it did."
"I told her the truth. I don't know what it does." She set down the spoon. "I know when it started, and I know who told me to."
"Tell me."
She wiped her hands slowly on her apron.
She had worked in this house for thirty years, and she had held me when my mother died.
I had never seen her afraid.
"Ada's mother was buried on a Thursday," she said. "The Priestess came for the burial. She comes to every funeral on the staff plot, and nobody else does."
"I didn't know that."
"You weren't there." It was not an accusation. It was a fact. "I carried her tea out to the garden. She was sitting on the bench by the lilacs, looking at the girl at the grave. Ada was twenty, thin, in her mother's coat."
