Chapter 19: The Council Hall

The council hall was full to the doors by moonrise.

Corwin sat in the Alpha's chair at the head of the long table, with Camille at his right hand in a soft grey dress.

Three elders sat below him, and the Beta stood behind them with her hands clasped.

Lucan walked in beside me, and he did not take my arm.

He stood one pace to my left, with his hands at his sides, as I had asked.

"The heir has called this sitting," the eldest elder said wearily. "Let the gamma speak."

"Former gamma," Corwin said gently. "For cause."

"The roll says dismissed," I said. "I'll start there."

I laid my phone on the table and showed them the roll notice, and the date.

"I was on Kerensa Sterne's couch that Monday night, with her needle in my ribs. My keycard opened a cabinet at the pack house while she held a bandage to my side. Ask her."

"I swear it," Kerensa said from the front row, standing. "On my cat."

A low laugh ran through the gallery and died.

"Who stamped it?" the eldest elder asked.

"The Alpha," I said. "He signed it himself."

Corwin did not move.

"And I think he did it to get me out of Fernhollow before the Ceremony." I took the green book from my bag and set it down. "Because for five years his father has been putting moonroot in my tea."

The hall went silent.

"It's the herb the clinic uses to quiet a wolf for surgery. Every full moon, in a thermos from his housekeeper. I stopped drinking it the day I left, and my wolf woke up. And the Priestess is here to tell you what it does to a bond."

The Priestess stood from the bench by the door.

She said what she'd said in the cabin, in four plain sentences, and then she said, "I saw the line at the funeral, Alpha. I told you. You asked me to wait."
