Chapter 8: The Alpha's Study

The fever broke that afternoon, and left me hollow and clear.

Emmett drove me down the mountain himself, because the creek had taken half the road.

He didn't ask about the night.

He only looked at the paper in my hand and said, "That won't hold."

"Why not?"

"Because the Alpha's stamp outranks the heir's. Everyone knows that."

Kerensa met me at the pack house steps with her car keys still in her hand.

"I found out who stamped it," she said. "The clerk checked the log for me."

"Lucan?"

"Dad."

I stood very still.

"There's a reason on file," she said. "It says you took council documents and gave them to Red Cedar."

"I went to Red Cedar after I resigned. I never took a page."

"I know. Ada, I know."

"Then let's ask him."

We found Corwin in his study on the second floor.

A fire was going in the grate, and the Beta stood at the window.

She was a tall grey-haired woman who had run the pack's patrols for thirty years.

She turned when I came in.

Corwin rose from his desk with his arms open.

"Ada. My dear. You look better."

"I'd like to talk about the roll."

"Of course."

I laid Lucan's paper on the blotter and flattened it with my palm.

"Lucan has withdrawn the dismissal."

"Lucan has no authority to." He said it kindly. "An Alpha's stamp stands until the Alpha lifts it. I'm sorry, my dear. It was a mistake from the start, and he's a boy in love with his own guilt."
