Chapter 9: You Wrote the Rule

I took a photo of the receipt before I'd decided to.

My phone was already in my hand, and my thumb was already moving.

Kerensa had turned to answer a question from the Beta, and Corwin was pouring himself water at the sideboard.

One click.

I slid the paper back under the blotter and walked out with my face perfectly flat.

Nobody stopped me.

On the landing, Kerensa squeezed my arm. "You're shaking."

"I'm fine."

"You're not. What did you see?"

"Later," I said. "Not in this house."

Lucan was waiting at the bottom of the stairs.

He had showered and changed, and he had dark shadows under both eyes.

He looked at me, and the pull in my chest gave a hard yank.

I put my hand on the bannister.

"You got my paper," he said.

"I did."

"I'll go up to him now. I'll make him lift it."

"Don't. He already said no."

His mouth tightened.

"Then I'll do it myself. I'm the heir. I can..."

"Lucan, you can't undo an Alpha's stamp. You know that. You've watched me file the forms for five years."

Kerensa melted away toward the kitchen with great tact and no subtlety.

He stepped closer.

"I have a house," he said. "The one on the lake. Nobody lives in it. It's yours, and your salary doubles, and you take the Beta's second chair on the council."
