Chapter 8: The Healer's Visit

Thane woke on my porch twenty minutes later, grey in the face, and wouldn't be touched.

He stood by himself, using the post for support.

"I'll drive myself," he said.

"You can't drive," Hoyt said.

"I can drive."

"You couldn't find the end of the ramp."

Two men drove him back to the Redwater gate in his own truck, with Hoyt following in his. Thane didn't argue.

He looked at me once from the passenger window.

I looked at the pile of sawdust where he'd been standing.

By two that afternoon, a white car was coming up the creek road.

Trudy saw it through the window and swore.

"Of all the times," she said. "Freya, let me deal with her."

"No. I'll go out."

I rolled onto the new ramp and waited.

Lorna got out slowly, in a long white coat over her gown, with a basket on one arm and a leather medical bag in her other hand.

Her hair was loose. She didn't look like a woman who had just taken a Luna's chair.

She looked tired and kind.

"Freya," she said. "I'm not here to fight. I came because the Alpha is home and resting, and Luther says you brought him back. Thank you."

"Hoyt brought him back."

"Thank you both, then." She held up the basket. "This is soup. It's not poisoned. I'll taste it first if you want."

I didn't know what to say to that.

"There was a little girl at the gate," she said, looking past me at the yard. "She told Thane's driver her sister had a fever for four days. Is that true?"

I looked toward the trailers.

A woman stood outside the nearest door with a child in her arms. The child's face was red and slack.
