Averett had one hand on the microphone when the barricade went.
He had been standing on the top step of the Kingsbury Tower for four minutes, in front of three thousand people.
Tindle had promised three hundred.
The crowd filled Fifth Avenue from curb to curb, banners and phones and children on shoulders, and it was still coming.
"Thank you for being here," Averett said into the microphone.
The cheer was a wall of sound.
He waited for it to die.
"I want to say something before the announcement."
Behind him, at the edge of the platform, Tindle took a half step forward, smiling.
The smile had slipped by a quarter inch.
"There is no engagement," Averett said.
Tindle's hand reached for the microphone.
Quarles got there first and planted himself between them.
"There never was," Averett said. "I've never met the woman whose name is on that press release. I've been paid..."
