Chapter 24: Untouched
At three in the morning on his twenty-third birthday, Averett was elbow-deep in dough.
The penthouse kitchen was warm and bright, and it smelled of yeast and orange peel.
Behind him, a stool scraped on the marble.
"It's three a.m.," said Jarek.
"It proofs best at three a.m.," Averett said.
"That's still not a thing."
"It's been a thing since October," Averett said.
Jarek came round the counter in a pair of gray sweatpants and nothing else.
His hair stood up on one side.
The tattoos ran dark and clear from his wrist to his collarbone in the light over the oven.
Averett had learned every line of them, and still looked.
"You're staring," Jarek said.
"I'm allowed," Averett said.
"Not at three in the morning."
"At three in the morning is the best time."
Jarek leaned on the counter and tore the end off a warm roll.
He bit into it, and his eyes went half shut.
"This is the one," he said. "The orange one."
