Chapter 24: One More Card
On Saturday at noon, twenty people stood on the east dock in the sun.
The new pilings were in. The cross-beams were bolted with hardware that would outlast all of us.
The old planks had been sanded by the crew, and the youngest man was still muttering about his hands.
I wore the tie.
Ingrid had told me nothing else. She had gone off at nine with a box under her arm and a look I couldn't read.
Hattie stood by the rail in a green dress, crying already.
The bearded fisherman and his wife had come, and his ten friends.
My aunt had driven up from Duluth with a cake. Dalton stood ten feet back from everyone, and Poppy sat on his shoulders in a yellow raincoat with a whale in her fist.
The cat sat on a bollard and judged us.
"What is this?" I asked the old man with the gray mustache.
"No idea."
"You always know."
"Son, I'm told to keep my mouth shut and hold a hat."
He was holding a hat.
Ingrid came down the ramp at noon exactly.
She wore a white shirt, clean jeans, and her braid pinned up with a pin I hadn't seen before.
She carried a small white box tied with a satin ribbon.
I stared at it.
It was the wrong box, of course. Brooke's was in a drawer in Duluth, if it was anywhere. Ingrid's was a plain shoe box that she'd wrapped herself.
But the ribbon was white, and my hands went cold.
"It's okay," she said, as she reached me. She had read my face. "It's a different one."
"I know."
"You can leave if you want to."
"I'm not leaving."
"Then we're going to play a game." She raised her voice for the dock. "Everyone gets a card and a pen. You write one true thing. Nobody signs it. Nobody gets mad."
