Chapter 13: The Folder

Cillian's POV

Tilly stopped crying when she saw Eliza's face.

She pulled out of my coat and looked from me to the porch, and I watched her do the sum.

"You know her," she said.

"Birdie," I said.

"I watched that clip on Thursday six times. The man at the back table, with his hand on her shoulder." Her voice went flat. "I said, he looks like Cillian. Then I said, Cillian is at work."

"Tilly, I can explain."

She hit me across the face with her open hand.

It stung. I had earned it, and I stood there and let her do it again.

"How long?" she said.

"Since August I've known his name."

"I never told you his name."

"No. I followed your car."

On the walk behind her, Eliza had gone very still.

"Eliza didn't know," I said. "Not who you were to me. Not until tonight."

"I know she didn't," Tilly said, without looking at her. "Look at her face."

Eliza came down the last step. Her hands were shaking, and she kept them at her sides.

"You were at Lumière," she said to me. "You sat there while he said it."

"Yes."

"And I said, this is my boyfriend, and you said yes."

"Eliza."

"Not on this lawn," she said. "Not with her standing here."

She turned and walked away down the street in the green dress, with her phone already at her ear.

I took one step after her.

Tilly caught my sleeve in both fists.

"Me first," she said.
