Chapter 15: Locks

By Monday at ten, I had slept two nights on Dani's couch and the shop had fourteen customers, and nobody wanted flowers.

Word had gotten around that the weather report girl had a shop in Fishtown.

Dani sold them carnations and gave each one a card with our hours on it.

"This is a gold mine," she whispered. "I hate it."

At ten past ten the bell rang, and the room went quiet in a way that told me who it was before I turned.

Trevor stood in the doorway in a navy coat with two dozen red roses in his arms.

They were wrapped in grocery-store plastic.

I took that personally, and it helped.

"Eliza," he said, in the voice for bad weather. "Can we talk?"

"We're open for business."

"Please."

Fourteen customers pretended to read the cards on the carnations.

A woman in the back row had her phone up already.

Trevor stepped to the middle of the floor. He lowered his head.

"I owe you the truth," he said, loudly enough for the room.

"That would be new," Dani said.

"I'd like to say it in front of people, because I've hurt you in front of people." He turned so the phone could see his good side. "The open relationship was never real. It was a test."

I waited.

"I was afraid," he said. "Three years is a long time, and I wondered whether you still saw me, or whether you only saw the forecast. So I asked something impossible. I wanted to see if you'd fight for us."

Someone near the lilies said, "Aw."

"And you did," he said, with his eyes shining. "You stood on a stage in front of four hundred people and you fought. Eliza, I've never felt so loved. I've ended it with her. I've ended it. It was never her."
