Chapter 16: Page One

Poppy stood up slowly.

She did not look at Lacey.

She looked at me, and I gave her a nod.

"Can I see that?" she said to the room.

A man at the next table took the paper from Lacey's hand, because Lacey was too surprised to hold on, and passed it down.

Poppy read it standing.

"This is page two," she said.

"It's the signed page," Lacey said.

"It's the signature page. I signed it. I'll say so right now, in front of everybody." Poppy pulled out her phone. "Page one is on my phone, because I photographed all of it the night you handed it to me. Want me to read the first line?"

Lacey said nothing.

Poppy cleared her throat.

"Purpose of engagement: to appear in a surprise gift video for the bride, Bridget Blythe, at the request of the groom. Fee, five hundred dollars. No ceremony, no vows, no marriage license, and no use of this video except as a private gift."

She held up the phone for the front tables.

"That's what I signed. I was told I'd be a joke in a photo. I was not told I'd be wearing a bride's shoes while the bride cried in a hotel room."

A woman at the board table put her fork down.

"You cut off page one," Poppy said to Lacey. "You thought if you held up the signature, no one would ask what it was attached to."

"That's not what I..."

"You also forgot something. I'm a real estate agent. I keep a copy of everything I sign."
