Chapter 23: No Lies Between Us

I walked up the platform steps alone, with Jonas's order still ringing in my head.

The square went silent.

Calvin stood at the General's right hand in his spotless lab coat, and he held his arms out to me.

"My darling," he said into the microphone. "You're safe."

I did not go to him.

I walked to the center of the platform, past both of them, and took the microphone off its stand.

"My name is Nina Hartwell," I said.

My voice went out across three hundred faces.

"I'm an ER nurse. I kept my own name when I married. And for twenty-three mornings, my husband drew my blood and told me it was for my iron."

A sound ran through the crowd.

Calvin lifted two fingers to his glasses.

"Friends, this is the trauma speaking..."

"The serum with his face on it is my blood," I said. "I'm immune. I have been since Day Two. I can show you the test."

I took the white strip out of my boot, and I held it up under the lamp.

Nobody moved.

"And the crates you've been given this week are three parts salt water. Two people on the ward have already died from it, and the General told the physician to burn the charts."

I had thought the crowd would roar.

It did not.

They were three hundred frightened people who had been fed a story for a month, and they looked at each other with their mouths open.

General Ames stepped forward very smoothly.

"Citizens. You have heard a woman in grief accuse the man who is saving your lives. Let us not shout. Let us ask questions."

He turned to me with a small, patient smile.

"Miss Hartwell, how did you come to this camp?"
