Chapter 27: The Drain
Jonas's POV
The camp physician sewed my shoulder shut on a ward cot with Nina holding the lamp.
She did not look away once.
The bullet had gone through the meat above the collarbone and missed the bone and the artery, and the physician said I was lucky.
I did not feel lucky.
I felt every stitch, and I felt Nina's hand shaking a little on the lamp.
"Hold still," the physician said.
"I am."
"You flinched."
"That was the lamp," I said.
Nina almost smiled.
The ward was full of the survivors from the lodge steps, sitting on the floor with blankets, waiting to hear what the sergeant would do with the General.
Ames sat on a stool by the door with two guards over him and his hands bound.
He had not said a word since the pad.
He watched me, and I watched him.
"Five minutes," the physician said, and tied off the thread.
When she had gone, Nina set the lamp on the floor.
"Calvin wants me at the door at dusk," she said.
"I heard."
"I'm going."
"No."
"Jonas."
"No," I said. "I won't lie to you about it. I don't like it, and I'm not going to pretend I do."
"He has Bixby."
"He has a scalpel and a locked room and he knows you'll come."
"I know he knows," she said. "That's why I'll go in the front."
I looked at her.
It was the same steady brown stare she had turned on a stairwell door and a crowd of three hundred, and I felt the old fear come up in my throat.
She was going to do it with or without me.
The only thing I could choose was where I stood.
"Then I go in the back," I said.
"There is no back. It's a steel door and a bolt."
"There's a floor drain."
She stopped.
"The young guard told me the night before the hearing," I said. "The boiler room has a floor drain, and the drain runs out under the kitchen yard. It's a cast pipe about two feet wide."
