Chapter 29: The General Loses the Room
The lodge square stood in lantern light, because the generator was dead.
Three hundred people filled it, shoulder to shoulder, and not one of them made a sound when I came up the cellar stairs with Jonas's good arm around my waist.
Bixby came behind us, leaning on the young guard.
The sergeant had brought a crate to the foot of the porch steps.
On it stood General Ames, with his hands bound in front of him and two guards at his elbows.
He did not look like a prisoner.
He stood straight, and he looked at the crowd with his chin up.
"People of Larch Ridge," he said.
His voice was as calm as it had been on the first morning.
"You have heard one man's boiler room confession and one woman's translation of it. I ask you to remember who has kept you fed for thirty days."
A murmur went through the square.
I felt it turn.
Thirty days was a long time, and every one of them had eaten his rations.
"Ask him a question," the camp physician said from the front. She had her sleeves rolled to the elbow. "Ask him where the charts went."
"I did not burn any charts," Ames said.
I stepped up to the crate.
I took his wrist in my hand.
He let me.
He looked down at my fingers with a faint, thin smile.
"Say it again," I said. "Loudly."
"I did not burn any charts," Ames said.
*I ordered them burned myself. Eleven deaths on that ward, and every one would have pointed back at the serum with my signature on the shipping order.*
"Eleven," I said, to the square. "Not two. He ordered the charts of eleven dead patients burned, because they would have shown the serum was salt water, and his signature is on the shipping order."
