Chapter 12: Two People
Annabel's POV
The nurse let me into 412 and closed the door behind her without asking why.
The neurologist had gone, and the machines had settled into a slow, steady beat.
Jude lay exactly as before, thin and pale, with the scar through his eyebrow.
I pulled the chair to the bedside and sat down.
"Okay," I said out loud. "Two people."
I took his hand.
It was warm, and it was rough across the thumb.
In my mind the door opened, and the Space opened with it, wide and grey.
"Hi," said Jude.
It was the same dry voice. It was gentler now.
"You said a day," he said. "It's been four hours."
"I changed my mind."
"I'm relieved. I'm also a little offended on behalf of my pride."
"Tell me who you are," I said. "Not the voice. You."
He didn't answer right away.
"I'm thirty. I grew up in Cheney, and my mom died when I was nineteen. I drive a courier van, and I'm good at it. I've never been late to the same place twice."
"Who do you call?"
"Nobody. That's why they gave you the form." His voice cracked on a laugh. "I have a very small life, Annabel. A van, a bad apartment and a plant I've killed twice."
"What's the plant?"
"Basil."
"That's not even hard."
"I know. I've been told."
I laughed, and I was crying again, and I let my thumb move over his knuckles.
"You heard me say all of it," I said. "At night, in the dark. I don't know how to get that back."
"You don't have to. I didn't tell anyone."
