Chapter 7: The Evaluation

They took my phone, my tote and my shoelaces, and they put me in a small room on the fifth floor with a bed and a chair.

I sat on the bed with my hands folded.

"Rules for tonight," Plus One said. "One. You are bored, not afraid. Two. No voices, no rain, no pallets. Three. Whatever she asks, answer the question she asked and not the one you wish she'd asked."

"You've done this before."

"I've watched a lot of television."

At nine o'clock a tired woman in a cardigan came in with a folder and sat in the chair.

She was the psychiatrist. She did not smile much, and she did not frown either.

"Ms. Holt. Do you know why you're here?"

"A friend is worried about me."

"Are you worried about you?"

"I had a car accident," I said. "I'm tired. I'm angry at my ex-fiancé, who left me in the wreck. I think I'd be worried if I weren't angry."

She wrote something.

"Your friend says you talk to yourself."

"I do," I said. "I make lists out loud. When I'm stressed, I narrate."

"Plausible," said Plus One. "Boring. Perfect."

"Your friend also says you made statements about the end of the world."

"I read a lot of survival blogs," I said. "After the accident I bought some water filters and rice. A lot of people do it."

"A lot of rice?"

"A hundred pounds," I said. "I'm a bulk shopper."

For the first time, the corner of her mouth moved.
