Chapter 8: Roommates

Hank gave Maisy the spare room and gave me the old sewing room, which had a narrow bed and a window that looked out on his barn.

He also showed us the well.

"Hand pump," he said, and he worked the iron handle until water splashed into a bucket. "Doesn't need power, doesn't need anybody. It's the best thing on the place."

"It needs a roof," I said. "In thirty days, no rain can touch that water."

"I'll start on it tomorrow," Hank said, and he went out to find his tools.

At midnight the house was quiet.

I lay on the narrow bed with the lamp off and my sling on the chair.

"Plus One," I said in my head. "Are you awake?"

"I don't sleep," he said. "I have no eyelids. Gift of the job."

"Can you see anything right now?"

"Only when you hold the door open. It's dark in here. I have the shelves, and about four hundred pounds of canned peaches."

I smiled at the ceiling.

"Maisy likes peaches."

"Maisy likes everything. She ate a granola bar on the way out of the hospital and called it a feast. I approve."

I turned on my side.

I could hear the wind in the dry grass outside, and the old furnace ticking.

"I have to ask you something," I said.

"Does it involve my favorite flavor of soup?"

"What are you afraid of?"
