Chapter 17: What I Wanted

Seth's POV

Hannah had never been inside my apartment, and she stood in the doorway holding a printout against her chest.

"I didn't know where else to go," she said. "Beth's in the middle of a bridal party, and I couldn't read this in her house."

"Come in."

My place was two rooms above the hardware store, with a couch I'd bought used and a kitchen the size of a closet.

I moved a laundry basket off the one good chair, and she sat down and set the paper on the table.

I read the booking confirmation standing up.

March fourteenth.

Sheridan's name, the Baby account's card, and the line about not contacting the groom's wife.

"I swear to you," I said, "I didn't know about this."

"I believe you."

"She told us it was spontaneous. She was so pleased with herself. I sat there that night and watched her pretend to think of it."

"Did Dylan know?"

"I don't know." I put the page down. "He put his name on the link without blinking, but he'd do that either way."

She nodded slowly.

I made tea because my hands needed something to do.

When I set a mug in front of her, she wrapped both hands around it and looked at me.

"Why did you drive him to that clinic and not ask?" she said. "You told me you were relieved he didn't talk. I've been thinking about it for a week. That's a strange thing to be relieved about."
