Chapter 18: Rule Zero

Hannah's POV

I heard it all through the balcony door, which Seth had left open an inch.

"Go home, Dylan," Seth said.

"Not until I talk to my wife."

"She's not your wife on the days you decide she isn't."

I slid the glass door shut behind me and stood in the middle of the room.

Seth had put his body in the gap of the front door, and Dylan was pressed against the other side of it, one hand on the frame.

"There she is," Dylan said, looking past Seth's shoulder. "Hannah, tell him to move."

"I'm not telling him anything," I said. "I'm listening."

"You're in his apartment at night."

"I'm in a friend's apartment at six-forty. I'm allowed."

Dylan laughed, short and ugly.

"A friend," he said. "Five years he sat at my table. Five years I thought he was my best friend, and he's been waiting for me to fall."

Seth did not flinch.

"I sat at your table because you were my friend," he said. "I should have stood up from it a long time ago."

"Oh, you're so noble."

"No. I'm not."

"You're not even denying it."

"I'm not going to deny a thing in front of her," Seth said evenly. "I'll tell you what I'll deny. I didn't take your wife. You handed her out the front door yourself, in front of twelve people, with a ring in her hand."

Dylan's face twisted.

"She's pregnant with my kid," he said. "My kid. And she's up here with you."
