Chapter 22: Corwin's End
Corwin hung from the lip of the crack by four fingers.
His boots scraped at the wall, and loose stone rattled down into the dark and did not strike bottom for a long time.
Jude lay where he had landed, with his side on fire and his breath coming in short sips.
He tried to rise and could not.
"Mari," Corwin said.
His voice was hoarse and very calm.
"Take my hand."
Marina walked across the cavern floor.
She stepped over the burning oil and past the empty chair and stopped at the edge, looking down.
Her lamp threw a yellow circle on the old man's face.
She saw the gray beard and the river scar on his neck and the eyes that were exactly her own.
"Take my hand," Corwin said again.
"You are my girl."
"I carried you on my shoulders."
"I know you did," Marina said.
