Chapter 16: The Men from the Warehouse

Tamara's front door has a chain, and I left it on.

Through the gap I could see Virginia's pearls and Kelsey's cream cardigan, and I could smell Kelsey's vanilla perfume.

It was the same perfume that had been on my white robe.

"We would like to come in," Virginia said.

"No."

"Rebecca. Be sensible. I've brought something."

She held up the gift bag from the hospital hallway, still tissue-papered and still unopened.

"Kelsey is carrying my second grandchild," she said. "You have my first. They will be raised as cousins, in the same house, at the same table. I have thought about it a great deal, and I think it is the generous solution."

"What house?"

"The lake road house, of course. Kelsey will take the downstairs rooms until you are settled, and Russell has agreed to be reasonable about the arrangement."

Kelsey stood a step behind her with her eyes on the floor of the porch.

She looked pale and tired, and thirteen weeks pregnant.

For half a second I felt sorry for her, and then I remembered the key.

"You want me to live with her," I said.

"I want my family under one roof."

"Virginia, I'm divorcing your son."

"Then do it slowly," she said. "There is a great deal of money in the next sixty days, and none of it will go to a woman who has made herself ridiculous in public."

Tamara came up beside me with a cat under one arm.

"Is she threatening you?" she said, loudly. "Because I'd love to hear it again for the neighbors."

Across the street a man raking leaves put his rake down.

Virginia flushed.

She leaned closer to the gap and dropped her voice.

"You have a baby, a sister's couch and three thousand dollars. I have a store, a lawyer, and sixty years of this town's goodwill. Think about who will win."
