Chapter 18: Refund Day
Tamara stepped in front of me and the tank before Kelsey could take another step.
"That's far enough," she said. "I have claws, and two cats."
"I'm not here to hurt anyone." Kelsey held up both hands. "I just need five minutes."
"You've had three weeks," I said.
"Please."
She reached into her tote, and the foreman moved a step closer.
She pulled out a white cardboard box tied with ribbon and a pale blue envelope.
"Everything's in there," she said. "Her bracelet. The curl in its little case. The dress. I put them in tissue. I never wore the dress, I never touched it. I only kept it in the closet."
"In your closet," I said.
"Yes."
"Next to your robes."
She started to cry, and she did it well.
"And this is a check for eighteen thousand dollars," she said. "It's everything in my savings account. I'll find the rest. I'll pay the families back. You could tell them I'm sorry. Tell them I never meant it to go so far. Please, Becky, I have nowhere to go. Russell won't answer. Virginia won't answer."
I looked at the box in her hands.
It was small and light, and I wanted it more than I had wanted anything in a year.
The showroom door chimed.
A woman in a gray coat came in, and behind her a man, and behind him another couple.
I knew them.
They were the mother with the rabbit and her husband, the gray-haired pair from the third row, and a father I had last seen holding Russell by the wrist in the car park.
Behind them came more.
Thirty, forty people filed in between the display sofas, quiet and in their winter coats.
Kelsey saw them, and her whole body went still.
