Chapter 6: Forty Families

The doctor read my numbers off the screen twice before she looked at me.

"One fifty over ninety-six," she said. "That's too high, and with the protein in your urine I'm calling it early preeclampsia."

"Is the baby okay?"

"For now. His heartbeat is strong." She tapped the monitor. "But I want you off your feet, Becky. Bed rest, a quiet house, and a blood pressure check here twice a week. If it climbs, we deliver early."

"I can't afford a quiet house," I said. "My husband's mother canceled my insurance."

"Did she?"

"She said it runs through the store."

The doctor pulled up my file.

"Your policy is through the pediatric dental office where you work, in your name," she said. "Your employer pays the premium. Nobody can touch it."

I let my breath go for the first time since the parking lot.

"Then what do I do about the stress?"

"Avoid it," she said, and for the first time she smiled. "I know. I'm saying it anyway."

Tamara installed me on her couch at six o'clock with three pillows, a blood pressure cuff from the pharmacy and a cat on each foot.

She had cooked something with noodles.

I ate half of it.

At seven, somebody knocked on the door.

Tamara looked through the peephole and turned around with her eyebrows up.

"It's a couple," she said. "Early thirties. She's holding a rabbit."

It was the pair from the front row of the studio.

The woman had a green folder under her arm, and the man held a paper bag from a bakery.

"I'm sorry to come to your sister's house," the woman said from the doorway. "I found the address on the pharmacy label you left at the studio. I couldn't sleep."
