Chapter 18: Still Live

The detective told me the rest on Thursday, standing in the studio doorway with his hat in his hand.

Shelby had kept the eighty thousand dollars for one day.

Then she had sent all of it back to Neil's new account, and Neil had spent it on one thing.

"The Madison Home and Remodel Expo," the detective said. "A double booth, a sponsor banner and the Saturday keynote. Holbrook Homeworks is the headliner."

"With my signature."

"With a signature the bank says you didn't write. I'd like to be in the room when he's asked about it."

"So would I," I said.

On Saturday morning the convention center was full of drywall dust, free pens and four thousand people in lanyards.

I walked in at ten with June, the foreman and eight carpenters in clean shirts, each with a binder under his arm.

The Holbrook booth was at the center of the main hall.

It had a twenty-foot banner, a render of the walnut wall and a sign in white letters.

HOLBROOK HOMEWORKS. DESIGNED BY HOLBROOK.

The render had been cropped to remove my initials.

I stood in front of it for a while.

"Want me to pull it down?" the foreman said.

"Not yet."

Neil saw me from the far end of the booth and went white.

Then he recovered, because there were two hundred strangers in earshot.

He put on his easy smile and came down the aisle with his hand out.

"Beth. You came. I'm so glad."
