Chapter 5: Thank You for Your Donation

"That book belongs to the store," I said. "I don't lend it out."

"She only needs to look at it. I'll bring it home tonight."

"You're not coming home tonight."

"Then I'll bring it back tomorrow."

"No."

Brett sighed into the phone.

"Lorena, it's a charity project. Shelby knows half the people in town who buy houses. If she posts a few pictures, that's free advertising for your new studio."

Shelby already had my husband, his crew and the whole day he'd promised my business.

Now she wanted the one book I'd paid four months of profit for, to pick curtains for her living room.

"No," I said again.

"Do you have to turn everything into a punishment?"

"The book stays in my studio."

I hung up.

A moment later he texted: We'll talk tonight.

I turned the phone face down on the invoice and finished signing.

My shop manager was setting up the office computer in the corner.

She logged into the studio's account, then looked over.

"Do you want me to forward the supplier emails out of the family inbox? Only the ones for the store?"

Brett and I shared that inbox.

We used it for taxes, insurance and the receipts from the charities we gave to.

I typed the password for her.

Seventeen messages sat unread.

The top one came from the gala's committee.
