Chapter 16: The North Wing Resigns

Three hundred heads turned to Isaline at once.

Casimir's hand went hard as iron on her waist.

She took it off her, gently, and stepped away from him so nobody could say she'd hidden behind a margrave.

"Since the fortieth night?" she said.

"Every night." Lothaire spread his hands. "My wife is shy. She asked me to keep it quiet until the hearing."

"How kind of you not to."

A few people laughed.

Not many. Most of them were watching the king.

The king hadn't moved. His chin was on his fist again.

"Marbrecourt," he said. "Sit down."

"Majesty, I only..."

"You only stood up at my table to tell my court where your wife sleeps. I've heard. Sit."

Lothaire sat.

"The temple will hear it on the hundred and first morning," the king said. "Bring your witnesses, Marbrecourt. I'm sure you have them."

Lothaire smiled at Isaline down the length of the hall.

"Oh, I have them, Majesty."

The next morning the household was called into the great hall again.

Footmen, maids, the steward with his keys.

The bishop's young clerk stood by the cold hearth with a writing board and a nervous face, sent to take down statements for the hearing.
