Chapter 21: The Peacock Room

The woman at the door of the Kujaku Room read Setsuko's invitation twice.

Then she looked up at Chiaki and bowed lower than she had bowed to anyone in the queue.

"Table three, Director Hayase," she said. "By the stage."

Chiaki had worn the dark green dress.

Haruka had told her she was insane. Then she had steamed it for her herself.

The room was the same room. It was always going to be the same room.

Only the banners had changed, gold on white: Hanamori Confectionery, Eighty Years.

Four hundred guests. Suppliers, retailers, the hotel association, every Hanamori manager in Japan.

At table one, below the stage, sat an old man in a wheelchair with a blanket over his knees.

The president. Reina's grandfather.

He was very small and very still, with thick white eyebrows, and he was watching the room the way Setsuko watched it.

Reina sat beside him in ivory, her hand on the arm of his chair.

She didn't look at Chiaki.

That was the plan.

At table three, Setsuko took the seat facing the stage. Kaname held Chiaki's chair.

"You're in the green," he said, very low.

"It's a good dress."

"I know," he said. "I was at table three the last time too."
