Baby Trapped by the Billionaire novel · Chapter 12 of 24

Chapter 12: Mine

I got into the car.

I don't know why.

Maybe because it was raining.

Maybe because I wanted to hear him say it with a door closed and nobody to perform for.

The heater ran, and water dripped from both of us onto the leather.

Gavin did not start the car.

He sat with his hands on the wheel, looking at the wipers that weren't moving.

"His," he said.

I waited.

"The baby is Nathan's."

I had known it for twenty minutes, and it still went through me.

"Say all of it," I said.

"At twenty-five he found a lump, and the doctors told him the treatment would end his chance of children. He banked one sample. One." His voice was raw. "He told me about it over a beer in the hot shop. He said he'd probably never use it, but it made him feel better to know it was there."

"And then?"

"And then he died, and I found his will in a drawer. He'd left me the vial. And a letter."

"What did it say?"

"That I should use it when I was ready to be somebody's father for him."

The rain ran down the windshield in sheets.

"I wasn't ready," he said. "I wasn't ready for four years. Then Harold's heart started to go, and he began to talk about Spencer's boys at every dinner, and I thought, if I can't be ready, at least I can do it."

"So you looked for a woman."

"I looked for a woman who wouldn't ask."

"And I asked."

"You asked for one rule." He laughed, short and awful. "No falling in love."

"That was my rule."

"I know. And I thought, thank God. Because I couldn't love a baby I was only keeping for someone else. I couldn't love its mother, either. That would have meant I was getting something out of it."

"Out of your brother's baby."

"Yes."

I pressed the heel of my hand to my mouth.
