Chapter 16: Dawn

The hospital at dawn smelled of floor wax and burnt toast.

I rode the elevator up alone, with a paper cup of ginger tea and a stomach that had decided to be polite.

Gavin had driven me to the entrance and then turned the car around.

Harold had told him to stay away until noon, and for once Gavin had done what he was told.

The old man was propped up against three pillows when I came in.

The monitors had been quieted to a murmur.

On the tray table in front of him sat a worn cream envelope with a lawyer's stamp on the corner.

"Close the door, Miss Hruska."

"Vera," I said.

"Vera." He tried the name out as if it were a new kind of tea. "Sit by me, where I can see you."

I sat in the vinyl chair.

"Do you know why I wasn't surprised yesterday?" he said.

"You said you were furious."

"That too. But not surprised."

He pushed the envelope toward me with two fingers.

"Four years ago, the week after we buried him, my lawyer brought me this. A copy of what Nathan left for his brother. He did not want me to see it. The lawyer thought I should."
