Baby Trapped by the Billionaire novel · Chapter 22 of 24
Chapter 22: Early
My water broke on Mother's Day, at Sunday dinner, with a tray of eight plates up my arm.
I want it on the record that I did not drop one.
It was the tenth of May, five weeks before the due date, and the glass ceiling was bright with rain.
Mila had insisted on serving.
"You've carried trays your whole life," she said. "Let me carry one. I'm cured and I need to be useful."
She had a head full of dark curls an inch long, with a yellow ribbon tied around them.
Her sense of timing should have been illegal.
I was only helping her set down the gravy.
Something warm ran down my legs.
I looked at the floor.
Harold, at the head of the table, looked at the floor too.
"Is that tea?" he said.
"No," I said.
"Ah," said Harold.
He banged the swan stick on the boards so hard the glasses jumped.
"Gavin! Your wife is leaking!"
Gavin had been cutting a roast.
He dropped the carving knife on the platter and was beside me before it stopped ringing.
