Chapter 20: The Gala
Margaret had put up a white tent on the lawn at Round Hill Road, with a string quartet and a hundred and twenty guests.
She had invited every director, every club member, and every newspaper in Fairfield County.
She wanted the town to see that the Ellacombes were still standing.
I came up the drive on Saturday night in a dark red dress, with Russell on one arm.
On the other side, a young nun pushed an old one in a wheelchair, and the old one held a canvas bag in her lap.
The Dunleavy lawyer walked behind us with a briefcase.
Margaret met us at the tent flap.
She wore the triple strand of pearls, a black silk gown, and her best smile.
"Lorna. How brave of you to come."
"I brought a guest, Mother."
Her eyes dropped to the wheelchair, and the smile stopped.
The old nun looked up at her.
"Margaret," she said. "You've gotten thin."
Margaret turned and walked into the tent without a word.
At nine, the quartet stopped, and she tapped a glass.
"One hundred years," she said, "since my husband's great-grandfather opened the doors of Ellacombe Savings."
