Chapter 22: The Wedding Again
On Saturday, November 16, Posy braided my hair herself.
She stood on a stool behind me in the bedroom, with her tongue between her teeth and her rabbit tucked under one arm.
The braid came out lopsided, and I wore it down the aisle with a ribbon at the end.
No one gave me away.
I had decided that on my own.
I walked up the center of St. Michael's alone, in a plain ivory dress that fit me.
Nobody in the building looked at anything else.
The church was full to the doors.
Three hundred drivers and dockhands had come in their one good suit each, packed into pews with their wives.
The widows from Putnam Avenue sat in the middle rows, holding paper programs.
The old nun sat at the end of the front pew in her wheelchair, with the young nun beside her.
In the very last row, by herself, sat Vivian, in a gray coat, with her hands folded in her lap.
She did not try to catch my eye.
Russell stood at the front in his hated suit, and his face did something I'd never seen it do in public.
It came open.
Ricky stood beside him as best man, in a clip-on tie, with his cap in his hand and the ring in his pocket.
