Chapter 23: March 3
On Monday, March 3, 1986, Vivian and I turned twenty-three.
Margaret's letter had asked for the day, and I had never learned to ignore an appointment.
She had pleaded guilty in January.
She had five years at the women's prison in Niantic, and she had asked to see both her daughters.
Vivian drove us there in the yard's old pickup, with her knuckles white on the wheel.
She had been at the dispatch desk for eighteen weeks.
She had apologized to three hundred men, one at a time, and not one of them had made it easy.
She still came in at seven.
The visiting room had a linoleum floor, plastic chairs, and a guard by the door.
Margaret was already seated at a steel table.
She wore a gray prison dress.
Her hair had grown out, and it was white at the roots, and she had no pearls at her throat.
She looked smaller.
She did not look sorry.
"Twenty-three," she said. "Both of you."
"Hello, Mother," Vivian said, and sat.
