Chapter 14: Chapter 14

Devon's house sat at the top of a hill in Los Feliz, behind a gate with a camera on it.

I had been through that gate a thousand times, and every time I had come in the back way.

Tonight he drove me through the front, and left the car in the middle of the drive.

The brass key with the blue tag was lying on the kitchen island.

He had put it there before the press call, on top of a clean sheet of paper.

"Terms," I said, and picked up the paper instead of the key.

It was blank.

"I didn't know what to write," Devon said. "I thought you'd rather write them."

I laughed, and then I stopped, because he meant it.

I found a pen in the drawer where he had always kept the takeout menus.

"One," I said. "My credit. Echo goes on every record with my real name under it."

"And I pick the day, not Hank or any label."

"Yes."

"Two. The truth, all of it, even when it's ugly. If you want to know something about me, you ask me."

"Yes."

"Three. No more stranger at the other end of an email. If I make you angry, you come into the room and say so."

"That's the one I'm worst at," he said.

"That's why it's three."

He nodded slowly.
