Chapter 15: Chapter 15
Northgate Music kept its conference room on the nineteenth floor, behind a wall of smoked glass.
At eleven o'clock on Wednesday morning, Lexi Rotherhithe sat at the head of its table with her laptop open.
Beside her sat her lawyer and a man from Northgate's A&R department, who had a legal pad and a bored expression.
"Thirty-eight demos," Lexi was saying. "All unreleased, all finished, all with clean vocals."
"I can send the folder after we agree on a number."
I opened the door and walked in.
Devon came in behind me, and behind him came Maxine's label lawyer, with a thin binder under her arm.
Lexi's smile stopped halfway across her face.
"This is a private meeting," her lawyer said.
"It is," said the man from Northgate. "I called Halo Row myself an hour ago, as a courtesy."
He nodded to me.
"You'll want to look at what she's offering. The folder is called 'Laurel misc.'"
"I know the folder," I said. "I made it."
