Chapter 17: Chapter 17
On Friday night Halo Row held the listening party for the tour record.
A hundred and fifty people crowded the live room in Studio B, and photographers lined the back wall.
The label's staff stood with their drinks, waiting for the first single.
Nobody in the room knew that Devon planned to talk first.
I stood at the side by the piano, in a black dress I had bought that afternoon.
He walked to the microphone in the middle of the room with a folded page in his hand, and he did not unfold it.
"Before you hear anything," Devon said, "I have three things to say."
The room went quiet.
"The first is about credit."
He nodded at the screen behind him, where the track list glowed in white letters.
"Three of these songs list me as a producer. 'Midnight Ledger,' 'Low Tide Radio,' and 'The Long Way Down.'"
"Hank put my name there, and I signed it without reading it, like everything else."
"I didn't produce them. I sat in a chair and sang."
He took out a pen.
"The credits are being corrected tonight, and I'm signing the correction in front of you."
