Chapter 15: Rugelach
The Taddeo car was gone by the time Asher got down to the loading dock.
The night man said it had pulled out at dawn with its lights off, as soon as the first delivery truck backed in.
Nobody had gotten out of it, and nobody had left anything behind.
It had only sat there all night, to show me they knew where the back door was.
On Wednesday, Esther Sklar took me to the bakery.
"You don't eat," she said, steering me by the elbow through the Margate heat. "Your mother had hips. You have a bad American diet."
"I eat."
"You eat standing up. Sit."
The bakery on Ventnor Avenue was a narrow shop with a glass case and a line to the door.
It smelled of yeast and burnt sugar.
The women behind the counter all knew Esther, and all of them looked at me.
Esther ordered for six people and carried a tray of rugelach to the single table at the back.
She sat across from me, took off her reading glasses and let them drop on their chain.
"He came home at dawn," she said.
"Who?"
"My son. After the funeral home. After your night. He came in the back door in his good suit, and he was gray."
