Chapter 18: Quirke's
Nicki's POV
Quirke's Pub on Tennessee Avenue had been dark inside since 1952, and it smelled of stout, floor polish and old rain.
At three on Tuesday afternoon it held six men and a television with the sound off.
Malachy Quirke sat at the far end of the bar with a glass in front of him.
His tweed cap lay on the stool beside him.
He stood when he saw me.
The six men found something to look at, and the bartender went into the back.
"Lass," Malachy said. "Thank you for coming."
"You asked me alone."
"I did. Where's the lad?"
"In the car outside," I said. "He's a good loophole."
Malachy gave a dry bark of a laugh and pulled out the stool next to his.
I sat.
He did not offer me a drink, which I appreciated, and he did not look at me at first.
He turned the glass on its coaster, a half turn, and another.
"Silvio asked to sit with me on Thursday night," he said. "At the back table, right where we're sitting."
"What did he want?"
"He wanted my word at the Closing, to refuse you the chair," he said.
"He offered the vending route in Atlantic County for the Quirke bars. Forty bars, lass. It's a lot of quarters."
