Brian's face did something I had never seen it do.
It went blank.
"Raymond called you," he said.
"He remembered me. From before."
"Before what?"
"Before you," I said.
I walked to the elevator.
Sebastian held the door for me.
When it closed, he shook his head.
"He's going to call Raymond tonight and ask what you two talked about," he said.
"We haven't talked about anything yet."
"Then Raymond will tell him the truth. That you're his wife and he invited you to a party."
"And that's all Brian will hear."
"That's all Brian ever hears."
Raymond Kessler's office was on the top floor of the Kessler Freight building by the rail yard.
I went on Friday, the day before the gala, at eight in the morning.
Brian had driven to Chicago for a client breakfast. He'd posted about it.
