I handed the microphone to Raymond's assistant.
Mia had come up beside her brother.
Her pinned-up hair was falling down on one side.
Behind them, Patrice sat in her chair with her hand over her mouth.
"You live with your father now," I said. "The judge said so. You asked her to."
"Dad's in jail," Mia whispered.
"Then go home with the family you picked."
Liam looked at the exit, where Danielle was standing with the detective.
"You mean her?"
"You told me she's been really good to you."
Mia's eyes filled.
"Mom, please."
"Your grandmother has a car," I said. "And a guest room. And a pie."
I picked up my clutch from table two.
Sebastian was holding my coat.
We walked out through the side door into the cold.
