Chapter 26: Dawn
The Headmistress came across the grass to me.
She looked at the blood. She looked at the black scales laid over my side.
Then she looked me in the face, and something in hers gave way.
"Speak it," she said quietly. "We're all here."
I turned to face them. The Council. The houses. The torches.
Morvran held me up.
"I'm Elowen Tremayne," I said. "Champion of the Trials. I stood the Watch at the Rift Altar, and I claim my boon."
My voice cracked. I made it go on.
"The feeder roll is abolished. From tonight, no student of Beastward pays for her schooling with her blood. Not a cup. Not a drop. Not ever again."
The Headmistress turned to the eldest councillor.
He looked at the forty feeders standing in a ring with their lanterns. At their bandaged elbows.
"Spoken at the altar," he said. "On Rift Night. By the champion." He bowed his head. "Granted."
The feeders didn't cheer.
Not at first.
They just stood there with their lanterns up.
Then the girl by the stove started to cry, and the boy from the back of the clinic put his arm round her.
Then all forty of them were cheering, so loud the houses stepped back.
