Chapter 28: Sentence

Morvran broke the gray seal and read the letter.

He read it again.

Then he held it out to me without a word.

I looked at him.

"No more secrets," he said. "You read it first this time."

I took it.

"The Warden Council offers Morvran, called the Tail-Eater, a seat upon the Council in the capital," I read. "The first beast to sit among the Wardens in the history of the kingdom. Answer is required by midsummer's end."

I put it down on the blanket.

"That's a very big letter," Kerensa said.

"It can wait a week," Morvran said. "There's a sentencing first."

The Great Hall was full again a week later.

I walked in on my own feet, with my side strapped under my dress and Kerensa watching me.

The tables were pushed back, like the day of the hearing.

The Council sat on the dais in their gray robes. The Headmistress sat at the end.

The houses filled the benches. The feeders, former feeders now, had the whole back of the hall.

Our mother sat alone in the front row.

Nobody was sitting near her.

Aveline came in between two proctors.

She was in plain gray wool. No silk. No pearls. Her bleached hair was growing out dark at the roots, the same color as mine.
